Work recently began on a new facility to house Station #4 Fire House. This new structure replaces the original Station #4, which was constructed in 1955. It is expected to be complete in summer 2009. The one story, double-bay facility will continue to house 15 firefighters in three shifts and is designed to be a home away from home.
Justin Dumsday, project architect says, “the tower element was designed to give identity to the fire hall and act as a landmark for the community it serves”. He continues, “the unique external tank has the ability to capture rainwater to be used for washing trucks. This demonstrates the City’s commitment to promote sustainable communities.” This project is intended to attain LEED certification. In addition to the water conservation feature, Fire Station #4 will have low maintenance floors, a residential sprinkler system in the sleeping areas and will include a community room that can be used by residents for meetings and other activities.
